The immune system is the body's primary defense against potentially harmful disease-causing invaders. The well-known invaders are bacteria and viruses. However, pollen, mold, household and industrial chemicals, and even food can trigger an immune response. It is this response that causes the familiar symptoms of a cold or flu. Other conditions or prolonged illness can result from continued exposure to a substance that causes an immune response.
