Intestinal
Permeability is now recognized as a link to clinical
infections, food allergy, Crohn's disease, dermatological conditions,
colitis and auto-immune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, and
other "allergic" disorders. Decreased permeability appears
as a fundamental cause of malnutrition, malabsorption and failure
to thrive. Causes can be linked to poor digestion over use of NSAIDS,
or Candida which cause tiny holes (permeability of the mucossal barrier).
Now undigested food, bacteria and other material can enter the blood
stream, but the immune system looks at this material as a foreign
invader and attacks it. So the food is no longer a nutrient, it becomes
a toxin, further adding to your toxic load, leading to allergic symptoms!
The small intestine has the paradoxical dual function of being a digestive/
absorptive organ for nutrients as well as a powerful barrier against
the excessive absorption of bacteria, food antigens and large molecules.
Increased permeability of the intestinal mucosal barrier can increase
the number of toxins & antigens entering the bloodstream and lead
to an overly sensitized immune system in some individuals. Decreased
permeability, on the other hand, appears as a fundamental cause of
malnutrition, malabsorption and failure to thrive. A number of clinical
disorders are associated with both conditions. See lab Test: Leaky
