Over
30% of all hip fractures occur in men, and the fatality rate from
these fractures is actually higher than in women.1 While aging women
have long reaped the health benefits of maintaining optimal levels
of important sex hormones like estrogen, until recently the medical
community has neglected addressing declining testosterone levels
in aging men that can result in bone frailty, loss of muscle mass,
and decreased sex drive.
Numerous
studies have reported an improvement in bone density attendant with
treatment for suboptimal levels of testosterone. Independent research
groups in the U.S. and Germany have concluded that hormone replacement
therapy for testosterone-deficient men increases both trabecular
and corticol bone mineral density of the spine, independent of age.2-4
For this reason, an analysis of testosterone levels in men provides
crucial information about the status of bone health and the likelihood
of developing osteoporosis.
The
Male Hormone Profile measures testosterone activity
over a 24-hour period for an accurate assessment of diurnal secretion
patterns.
