More
than half of patients who experienced a heart attack had "normal"
Cholesterol test results.
THe
VAP (Vertical-Auto_Profile) cholesterol test improves risk asssessment
by combining a more accurate LDL measurement and new cholesterol
information identified by the National Cholesterol Education Program
(NCEP) guidelines to identify more patients at risk and promote
more aggressive therapy.
VAP is the first cholesterol test
in compliance with current NCEP
guidelines, the additional information
includes emerging risk factors like
metabolic syndrom-a precursor for
diabetes.

The VAP Test is a better cholesterol test. Like routine tests, the
VAP Test measures total cholesterol, HDL ("good" cholesterol),
LDL ("bad" cholesterol, and triglycerides. But the VAP
Test also measures cholesterol subclasses that play important roles
in the development of heart disease. This additional information
allows your doctor to imporve the detection of heart diesase risk
from about 40 percent to 90 percent.
The VAP Test reveals important additional risk factors (hereditary
and lifestyle) not detected by the Standard Lipid Panel (Lp(a),
small/dense LDL-C, IDL-C, HDL2, Metabolic Syndrome) which will preventinitial
cardiovascular events in indignosed individuals.
The VAP Test allows for more appropriate treatment options (drug
therapy, lifestyle, diet, exercise) to match the specific risk factor
identified by the VAP Test results in decreased mortality rates.
Directly measures total cholesterol.
Directly measures HDL and seperates into HDL and HDL3 (HDL2 is the
"best" cholesterol and when low, is a risk factor for
CAD, HDL3 is the least protective HDL).
Directly measures LDL and seperates into 3 components: LDT-R; Lp(a);
and IDL (total LDL may be normal, but one of the 3 components of
LDL may be elevated and indicate a risk for CAD. Lp(a) is a genetic
risk factor that, when elevated, could indicate a higher risk for
heart disease. IDL is also a genetic risk factor).
Measurees LDL pattern density. (Pattern A indicates large, buoyant
LDL particles. Pattern B indicates small. dense LDL particle and
is most atherogenic).
Directly measures triglycerides.
Directly measures triglyceride-rich lipids: VLDL 1,2,3 and total)
(VLDL3 is small, dense and most dangerous).
Fasting not required.
