ADULT
ONSET DIABETES
THERE ARE MANY CAUSATIVE FACTORS IN THE FORMATION OF DIABETES
Usually
diet the standard American diet (SAD) is the main cause contributing
to the development of diabetes, obesity and lack of exercise. However
new clinical data is now available to us that may help practitioners
and patients alike. There are several areas that must be looked
at in depth to assess the root cause as follows: the main causes
is nutritional insufficiencies, parasites are a known contributing
factor; specifically a parasite that attacks the pancreas which
controls blood sugar, toxic metals also contribute to the onset
of diabetes, mineral imbalances and deficiencies play a major role
as well, medication side effects have been know to bring on diabetes,
as well as allergies affecting blood sugar regulation and immune
function, and down-regulation of the Pineal Gland, Thyroid Gland
and of course the Pancreas. Last but not least, obesity and lack
of exercise are a major contributing factor. But do not fret, here
in are natural solutions to reverse this process and aid your body
in not only regaining health, but obtaining radiant health!
Prolonged
unhealthy blood sugar metabolism can significantly affect the health
of your nerves, eyes, blood vessels, kidneys and pancreas. It can
impact your weight, body shape, energy levels, blood pressure, cholesterol,
triglycerides, overall cardiovascular health and more. Over 60 million
Americans have "insulin resistance," a form of unhealthy
blood sugar metabolism that frequently goes unrecognized and can
progress to the point where signs of significant health deterioration
appear.
Don't
let this happen to you! It is never too late to learn how you can
achieve and maintain healthy blood sugar metabolism and experience
the benefits of sustained good health.
If
you came to me for a nutritional consultation and told me you have
adult onset diabetes or blood sugar problems, I would take the following
steps to first determine the root cause so I could provide you with
the proper solution so insulin injections would eventually not be
needed..
First
a complete history would be taken which includes, family history,
genetic pre-dispositions, diet and exercise analysis and based on
the scoring potential of the intake form and history I may need
to do further testing to determine the root cause. Test results
usually take two weeks to come back. Prior to the receipt of the
report of findings however, steps must be taken to rule out some
of the other contributing causative factors and certain steps must
be taken to improve your health
TESTING
BASED ON INTAKE FORM
Due
to the fact that the report of finding takes two weeks, specific
tests must be completed for proper analysis of the root cause. These
tests are not standard tests provided by allopathic doctors, they
are high tech functional assessments that are very accurate and
sensitive. These are of course based on your history and initial
intake form and are only performed with your consent. Not all tests
are required, only the ones indicated by your history and intake
form.
Insulin
resistance. The Glucose/Insulin Tolerance Test is an oral glucose
loading test which permits an accurate diagnosis of glucose dysregulation
(hypoglycemia, diabetes) and provides insight into early signs of
the metabolic syndrome characterized by elevated insulin levels
in response to the glucose challenge. With its extensively researched
commentary, this test allows practitioners to evaluate patterns
of insulin secretion and glucose clearance as a means of differentiating
between insulin deficiency and insulin insensitivity.
Metabolic
Analysis Profile evaluates the body's production of energy, this
profile assesses metabolites that serve as important intermediates
in the citric acid cycle. This cycle supplies the body with its
primary energy needs, converting 90% of food energy into cellular
energy. This subpoenas also includes carbohydrate metabolites that
can signal impaired glucose (blood sugar) metabolism. Additional
markers help evaluate the body's breakdown of fats and its production
of cholesterol and coenzyme Q10. Imbalances of cellular energy metabolites
are linked with chronic fatigue, accelerated cell breakdown, and
unhealthy aging. Finally, this test provides a functional assessment
of nutrient sufficiency and usage that covers a broad range of vitamins,
coenzymes, elements, enzyme activators, and other nutrients. An
analysis of amino acid metabolites which require vitamin and mineral
cofactors for their metabolism can point to deficiencies of vitamins
B6, B12, and C, magnesium, copper, iron, as well as various amino
acids.
MINERAL
IMBALANCES/TOXIC METALS -Toxic Element Profile provides information
on mineral imbalances and toxic elements one has been exposed to
which have a huge impact on diabetics.
Guyton,
a well-known physiologist and author of medical textbooks, long
observed a relationship between calcium, magnesium and insulin.
Their precise relationship still has not been fully explained. Calcium
seems to have a stimulating effect on insulin. Patients with hyperinsulism
meaning excess insulin release have been observed to have higher
levels of calcium in their tissues. The opposite is also true, diabetics
who have been tested for insulin first thing in the morning and
who have shown to have low levels have also been found to have excessively
high magnesium levels in their tissue. Some researchers feel that
it is the imbalance between the two that is key. It has been sighted
that very high calcium and very low magnesium also occur in diabetics.
It is not my purpose here to argue either but to point out that
in diabetes these two very important minerals are grossly imbalanced.
I have observed that when patients are put on a program that is
correct and causes and improvement in their sugar level as evidenced
by either a urine or blood test that these two minerals do improve
in their balance to one another.
Hair
is perhaps the best specimen through which to evaluate mineral imbalances
and toxicities. It provides good long-term exposure assessment,
is non-invasive, is inexpensive, and allows for investigation of
nutrient/toxic interactions which are only beginning to be determined
for the other samples, like blood or urine.
Chromium:
is a key element in glucose utilization, and adult-onset diabetics
have significantly lower hair chromium levels. Recent studies also
show that hair chromium rises in gestational diabetics, suggesting
that an underlying cause of glucose intolerance in gestational diabetes
mellitus may not be chromium deficiency but instead impaired chromium
utilization. Magnesium: There are many studies involving this
macro mineral nutrient in the hair; and levels do increase with
even fairly low amounts of supplementation. In one study of
elderly patients, a higher hair magnesium level was associated with
higher rates of regional cerebral blood flow. Low magnesium
has been linked with complications of diabetes and certain circumstances
with schizophrenia.
Cadmium
and Mercury are two toxic metals which we can encounter daily. They
can be found in our food, beverages, personal care items and so
forth. Both of them cause an excretion of zinc from the body and
also block its functions. Iron, an essential nutrient responsible
for red blood cell production is another possible toxin to the pancreas.
It is quite common to find excessively high levels of iron in the
tissues of diabetics. In excessive, it will damage and destroy the
cells in the pancreas, liver and spleen.
ALLERGIES
We have found in our clinic that blood sugar has dramatically improved
with the avoidance of certain allergenic foods. Dr. Jonathan Wright
M.D. Routinely checks all patients with high blood pressure and
diabetes for allergies because of this fact. The Comprehensive Allergy
Profile - not only provides you with a list of 190 different foods
you may be reacting to but also a food rotation diet, to aid in
the mitigation of the allergen or sensitivity.

PARASITES
Eurytrema pancreaticum is a parasite found in the pancreas. It is
the type of parasite referred to as a fluke and comes from cattle
and pigs. Some researchers claim that its presence causes diabetes
due to the damage it creates in the pancreas. This parasite digs
right into the gland destroying large amounts of its tissue. In
our own practice some patients who were diabetic found that their
blood sugar normalized and they were able to stop their medication
after completing a parasite-killing program. While this is a real
possibility it is very difficult to test someone for this. The only
way to see if it is the culprit would be to
undertake a parasite-killing regime.
MEDICATIONS
Believe it or not there actually exist prescription medications
whose known side effects are elevated sugar. I would not attempt
to list them here but would advise you to carefully check with your
doctor regarding this. You may have to look it up yourself if the
doctor is too embarrassed to discuss this point.
NUTRITIONAL
INTERVENTION AN EFFECTIVE APPROACH
Implementing
a program of regular exercise and effective weight control is important.
Following specific dietary guidelines primarily choosing foods that
have a moderate effect on raising blood sugar, referred to as "low
glycemic index" foods and choosing foods and supplements that
improve the body's ability to support the effect of insulin, functionally
reducing "insulin resistance."
In nutrition many vitamins and nutrients have been sighted as being
a great help to diabetes. By supplementing your diet with a combination
of high macro nutrients that include soy protein, special fibers
and low glycemic starch such as high-amylase starch to help support
healthy carbohydrate absorption and blood sugar metabolism.
Supplementing
your diet with various fatty acids and micro-nutrients may also
be helpful. These include the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA
to support healthy cell membranes; CLA to support the insulin signal
and promote adequate gene expression for improved utilization of
sugar by the mitochondrion, lipoic acid to further support insulin
signal and sugar utilization by the mitochondrion; the minerals
vanadium, chromium and magnesium to provide additional support to
the insulin signal; vitamin E and inositol for future insulin signal
support; and biotin to support sugar utilization by the mitrochondrial.
The B complex vitamins have always been utilized in Diabetes as
they help convert food into energy. Zinc is an essential mineral
to the pancreas as it is involved in insulin production. Vanadyl
sulfate a recent discovery has been found to greatly enhance the
actions of insulin. It helps boost insulin's actions and helps to
regulate fats. There is a lot of data available about these nutrients
and many others. However in order to achieve a greater understanding
of diabetes we must look all the possible relationships.
THE
STANDARD AMERICAN DIET (SAD)
It is a known fact that Diabetes as a disease is common to the civilized
races of the world and unheard of amongst primitive people. Dr.
Weston Price in his book DIET AND PHYSICAL DEGENERATION made a very
interesting observation. Dr. Price studied and examined people for
all over the world. He noted very clearly that those people who
did not have access to modern packaged foods had much better health,
better teeth (Dr.Price was a Dentist) than those people who lived
only a short distance away but who ate a diet filled with modern
sugar and fat loaded foods.
Raw
foods have been found lower the requirement of insulin to control
blood sugar. In 1975 vol.82 of the ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE,
John M.Douglas found that a diet high in raw uncooked foods actually
lessened the demand for insulin to keep sugar levels normal. This
means to me that the American diet, which tends to be very low in
raw food, would cause a greater need for insulin. Man living naturally
in the wild or any culture that tends to "live off the land"
would normally eat more raw food.
My
theory is that part of the actual cause of diabetes is that man
becoming civilized has been including less raw food in his diet
over the period over hundreds of years. This could be proven rather
easily. But this being the case would cause a greater need for insulin
then the body once had. Many people's bodies may not be able to
adapt to cooked food diets making them more susceptible to diabetes.
The proof is that when many diabetics go on a diet of at least 60%
raw food the blood dramatically improves.
OBESITY
This is a known fact and nothing new but it does need to be included.
Probably the most common prescription for any diabetic will be weight
loss and exercise. It remains as effective as any treatment mentioned.
Exercise helps regulate blood sugar.
Insulin
dependent diabetes usually occurs in people below 30. These people
are not necessarily overweight. They will show very low levels of
insulin in their blood. Non-insulin dependent diabetes attacks those
over age 30 who may have a weight problem. Interestingly enough
they do show insulin in the blood but the secretions are low relative
to the amount of incoming sugar. Their sugar appears to be resistant
to insulin. Juvenile Diabetes is the name given to this illness
when it strikes a child. They most always end up on insulin.
MINERAL
DEFICIENCIES
We touched on this at the beginning and there is no doubt that vitamin,
mineral and herbal programs have helped many diabetics. However,
as always, I will strongly recommend proper testing to determine
which nutrients you need. AN EXCESS OF ANY NUTRIENT CAN CREATE THE
SAME SYMPTOMS AS IT WILL WHEN IT IS DEFICIENT. This one point can
make a very big difference between success and failure. The most
commonly needed nutrients by diabetics are vitamins E, B1, B6, and
B3 and vanadium. All have been found essential in controlling blood
sugar. The minerals Zinc, Chromium, Vanadium, Molybdenum and Selenium
are all involved in the regulation of sugar, each in a different
way.
HYPOTHYROIDISM
This problem when addressed can be like a miracle to the diabetic
patient. Although it has received little attention in orthodox medicine
I have seen numerous cases of diabetes, which responded to programs,
aimed normalizing thyroid function.
PINEAL
GLAND INSUFFICIENCIES
This is a topic that few nutritionists could explain. The pineal
gland and the posterior pituitary gland are involved in balancing
sugar. They do so by producing hormones that affect the kidneys.
These hormones tell the kidneys how to balance sugar and water in
the body. They direct the kidneys to eliminate water and sugar in
different proportions. If these glands malfunction due to a lack
of the vitamins or minerals that they depend on they can contribute
to blood sugar elevations. It takes a very sharp nutritionist to
fix this one.
WHAT'S
THE SOLUTION?
This is always my favorite part of an article, giving you solutions.
This article is actually a checklist for detecting if a diabetic
can be helped by alternative treatment. A diabetic should be checked
out on every one of these items to see which apply. At my offices
we have specialized tests which aid in determining insulin resistance
or tendencies towards diabetes.
So
we begin by having the person do a seven to twelve day parasite
cleanse to make sure they do not have Eurytrema pancreaticum. I
know of very few people who wouldn't benefit from a parasite cleanse
at best it could do no harm..
In
fact, the only people I can think of who wouldn't benefit are deceased.
After the parasite cleanse we would have the person do an intestinal
cleansing program. This would be done for several reasons. The most
important is that unless we detoxify the body it will not be able
to properly absorb the needed nutrients. We would also gradually
increase the amounts of raw foods thus adjusting the diet adding
plant based digestive enzymes to aid in not only digestion, but
absorption. This would tend to assist the cleansing process anyway.
At this time we would also test the person for toxic metals and
allergies and begin to handle these if they are present. We would
also now begin to add any nutrients that we found to be low or imbalanced,
which might effect blood sugar. At this point weight loss would
have occurred as a natural result of more raw foods and the elimination
of processed nutrient deficient foods as well as the intestinal
cleansing program.
LAST
BUT NOT LEAST
The last step involves balancing every gland and organ involved
in the metabolic process along with every nutrient that the gland
or organ uses. The Metabolic Analysis Profile will help us determine
this. The goal of this approach is simply to rule out the root causes.
By the time we finish we undoubtedly have a healthier body. As time
passes and more possible underlying causes are uncovered we can
categorize these into the four step approach program. This means
that there is hope that a natural program will be more effective
than a drug for diabetics!
