One
of the body's primary self-defense mechanisms is to convert and
"neutralize" metabolic products and toxins into safe by-products
which can then be eliminated from the system. Simply put, the liver's
ability to detoxify substances is what prevents the body from poisoning
itself.
Repeated exposure to toxins in the food and environment, along with
accumulation of naturally occurring toxins inside the body, can
greatly intensify an individual's detoxification burden.
Patients suffering from toxic overload may experience fatigue and
have poor tolerance for exercise. Researchers have discovered that
many Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) patients have impaired liver
detoxification ability and show increased toxic exposure, which
may actually trigger or,at the very least, worsen conditions associated
with CFS.1,2
The Detoxification
Profile assesses the body's ability to carry out detoxification
after ingesting three challenge substances (caffeine,
acetaminophen, and salicylate). In the Comprehensive version of
the test, two urine and one blood sample reveal the body's detoxification
capacity and general susceptibility to oxidative damage.
