Tryptophan,
an essential amino acid, has been called a "natural hypnotic"
for its important role in the biochemical mechanism of sleep. By
providing source material for the production of serotonin--an important
natural relaxant--tryptophan is a crucial component of the homeostasis
process that modulates a healthy sleep wake cycle in the body. Research
has shown tryptophan improves the quality of sleep and reduces sleep
latency--without giving rise to the negative effects on memory and
cognitive performance that are often seen in association with benzodiazepine
drugs.1-3 There
is also growing evidence that amino acids
are involved in neurotransmitter dysfunctions
related to restless legs syndrome and
periodic limb movements during sleep.4
The Amino
Acids Analysis can reveal deficiencies of tryptophan
and other amino acids which may be contributing to various sleep
disturbances, thereby providing a solid basis for safe and timely
replacement therapy.
