The
balance of fatty acids inside the body plays a pivotal role in modulating
immune function and inflammatory response. Because omega 3-polyunsaturated
acids decrease the production of certain cytokines - proteins that
regulate many immune reactions within the body - they may help to
guard against some of the debilitating conditions associated with
AIDS, such as intestinal mucosal damage (see AIDS
and Intestinal Permeability) and AIDS wasting syndrome.1,2
AIDS
patients often exhibit significantly reduced levels of essential
and metabolic fatty acids.3 One
group of researchers even proposed
that a deficiency in gamma-linolenic
and/or eicosapentaenoic acid may
make an individual more susceptible
to develop AIDS. They argued that
because these important fatty acids
exert anti-viral effects and indirectly
modulate immune response, they are
potentially important in the treatment
and prevention of AIDS.4
The Essential and Metabolic Fatty Acids Analysis identifies levels
of 30 individual fatty acids and determines five crucial fatty acid
ratios, establishing a clear and solid foundation for designing
and monitoring a precise, effective nutritional dietary and/or supplement
program for each individual patient.
