Phenyalanine is an important essential amino acid—the body
cannot produce it so it must obtain it from dietary sources. Among
its many therapeutic uses, phenyalanine can increase levels of sexual
interest.1 Histidine,
another amino acid metabolized into the
neurotransmitter histamine, helps to
promote sexual arousal.2
A
double-blind, placebo-controlled
study shows that the amino acid
L-arginine holds therapeutic promise
in treating men with erectile dysfunction
stemming from low levels of nitric
oxide, a natural substance in the
body which relaxes blood vessels
and mediates penile erections.3
The Amino
Acids Analysis (blood or 24-hour urine) can measure levels of
over 40 different amino acids, revealing imbalances which may be
significant contributing factors in sexual dysfunction.
