Dr.
Jon Pangborne, a leading expert on amino acidopathies, notes that
headache symptoms can be spurred by imbalances signaled by several
amino acid profiles. One possible cause of headache is a nitrogen
imbalance in the central nervous system. Nitrogen excess, or hyperammonemia,
is a classic cause of migraine. This is indicated by elevations
of glutamine, glycine, alanine, and others, via plasma or urine
analysis.
There
are also several unusual amino acid impairments that can cause headaches.
Hyperphenylalanemia/uria is the most common. A urine analysis shows
this condition most clearly, and the best treatment is a low-phenylalanine
diet.
Migraines
are also believed to be related to blood platelets--the blood components
involved in clotting. The amino acid taurine is uniquely concentrated
in platelets. One study found taurine levels in platelets were much
higher during periods of migraines. Researchers concluded that both
taurine and serotonin (a product of the amino acid tryptophan) play
a key role in platelet-related migraines.1
The
Amino Acids Analysis uses a blood or urine sample to assay over
40 amino acids, including all essential, semiessential, and protein-forming
amino acids. Should test results reveal critical imbalances, an
amino acid supplement schedule is included.
